PROFILE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
Women’s College, Tinsukia is one of the premier educational institutions for women in north eastern part of India which was established on 9th July 1966. From the inception of the college Logic was offered as a subject in H.S level and at that time Philosophy was not introduced. Subsequently in the year 1967 Philosophy was introduced as one of the subjects in B.A courses and it continued up to 1988. In 1989 B.A (Three year degree course) with Honours in Philosophy is started in undergraduate level under Dibrugarh University. From the inception Department of philosophy played an important role in the academic excellence of the college and also other aspects of the college such as sports, culture etc.
Along with this course Department of philosophy offers two Value-added Certificate courses (sixths month’s duration) and these are (1) Yoga for Spiritual development w.e.f 2021 and (2) Applied Ethics w.e.f 2022. These courses are open for all students. The main objectives of these two courses are:
a. To enable the student with healthy mental and physical life,
b. To apply ethical theory to real life situation and to understand the use of ethical values in day today life.
Other important aspects of the department are:
· Department of Philosophy publishes a biannual book with ISBN ‘DEVAKSARA’ since 2011.
· Students of the Department prepare a departmental wall magazine in every year on subject related themes ‘DRISHTI’.
· Students of the Department publish a hand written magazine every year- ‘PRATIBIMBO’.
· Department of Philosophy published the 1st issue of the Newsletter ‘PRABHAT’ on 2023.
